The Department of International and Applied Economics is the cornerstone of the university’s economic education. It provides economics students with the micro and macroeconomic knowledge that underpins their economic studies, as well as some knowledge related to many aspects of international management and economics. We teach economics in almost every department of the university. This subject is essential to understanding the processes around us and to maximising our daily management. We also teach a range of interdisciplinary subjects to give our students a broader picture of international relations and economic processes.
Our aim is to provide an education that not only gives our students a theoretical foundation, but also develops practical skills and prepares them for the challenges of our constantly changing world.

Research profile
The department’s research focuses on a wide spectrum of economic and social processes through micro-, macroeconomic and international economic topics, with a special emphasis on issues related to sustainability and technological development.
In our research, we examine the changes in the processes, sectoral structure and value chains of the domestic real economy, as well as their risk factors. In our analyses, we deal with the economic and environmental impact assessment of macroeconomic decisions and the input-output modeling of global value chains (GVCs), but foreign economic relations also appear among the research topics in a traditional bilateral approach, primarily in relation to Hungary and the countries of the Asian region (e.g. India, South Korea) and Southeast Europe.
In our scientific publications, special attention is paid to the interactions between demographic and economic processes (migration, social mobility), as well as the effects of artificial intelligence and automatization on the labor market.
The department examines the possibilities of network theoretical approaches in the analysis of economic systems. Network analysis identifies the relationships between market players and helps to understand hidden patterns of economic behavior and decision-making.
The department’s research addresses the opportunities for implementing a circular economy, the barriers and incentives for industry transition. Our studies focus on increasing resource efficiency, developing sustainable business models, creating energy efficiency, using biofuels, and environmental justice.
